PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS AND SCULPTURE
Why do we draw, paint or make sculpture?
A drawing or an etching or a photograph may illustrate what it looks like in Rome, or wherever the traveler is interested. A statue of Christ, or the fresco on the ceiling, serves to reinforce the message from the pulpit. A physician’s course of study includes drawings and models of the organs and bacteria. A map tells you how to get there. A splash of color, a pattern of geometry may have no purpose other than to stimulate and delight the eye.
To me, the first purpose is to understand. The mystery is solved, the mastadon is understood, the landforms, the drainage lines, the situation of the village on the mountain are drawn and painted in order to find their secrets. The face, the eyes, the secrets of life are revealed through the medium of art.
